This crochet hat and scarf pattern free tutorial makes a gorgeous matching set that will keep you warm and cozy. Designed using chunky yarn, it works up quickly.
The alternating texture on the scarf adds character to the piece and the fake bobbles make it a simple pattern perfect for beginner crocheters. The hat is also designed using the same fake bobbles made from alternating triple and single crochet stitches.
This crochet hat and scarf set is designed using Lion Brand Re-spun Thick and Quick yarn. I have never seen a bulky yarn have so much yardage for the price and it comes in a beautiful range of colors. It is a must-try!

Bumpy Road Hat and Scarf Crochet Pattern
Materials
1. Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick and Quick, a size 6 super bulky yarn in color Pumice Stone
2.An N/P (10mm) crochet hook
3.Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
4. A 5-1/2″ wide book or a 5-3/4″ wide piece of thick cardboard for making the tassels.
Finished Size of Crochet Hat and Scarf Pattern
Made to fit women.
The finished scarf is 7″ wide and 83″ long without the tassels. Tassels will add another 9″ to the length. You can reduce the length by skipping the middle sections of the scarf if needed, but I like mine long.
The finished hat is 10″ tall and 18-1/2″ wide for sizes Small to Medium and 19-1/2″ wide for the Large size before seaming. It will stretch to fit a woman’s head.

Scarf: 2 skeins of Lion Brand Re-spun Thick and Quick or 370 yards of any other yarn of the same gauge
Hat: 1 skein or 150 yards

sc2tog: Pull up a loop in the 2 sts specified, YO and pull thgrough all the 3 loops on your hook.
FLO: Instead of inserting your hook under both the loops of your stitch, you will insert it only under the front loop and leave the back loop free, see the picture below.
BLO: Instead of inserting your hook under both the loops of your stitch, you will insert it only under the back loop and leave the front loop free, see the picture below.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and across to end, turn.————15 sc

Note: In the next row and all the rows following it, the last st is worked into the beginning ch-1. This helps to keep the edges straight.

Repeat sections 2 and 3 seven more times, and then repeat section 2 once. If you want to make your scarf shorter than mine (83″), repeat sections 2 and 3 until your scarf is approximately 6″ less than the final length you want. You should end with a repeat of section 2.
Each repeat of sections 2 and 3 will add 8-1/2″ to the length of your scarf.
Last Section

Adding Tassels to the Scarf
Notes
1. You can use a slightly smaller hook for adding the tassels.
2. Take care not to add too many tassels or the edge of your scarf will widen out. I only added 10 tassels across the 15 sts on the edge.
Take a small book approximately 5-1/2 inches wide or a thick piece of cardboard 5-3/4″ wide. Wind yarn around the book or cardboard multiple times. Cut along one side to get multiple strands of the same length.
Take two strands, fold at the middle of the strand, pull through the edge of the scarf to form a loop, grab the 2 ends with your hook, and pull through the loop. Now tug gently to tighten the loop.
Matching Crochet Hat Pattern
Pattern Notes
1. The hat is worked flat from side to side and seamed.
2. There is a straight seam at the back of the hat.
3. You have to work your sl sts loose as you will be working into them in the next row. To work your sl sts loose, pull up the loop on your hook to make it bigger before you work your sl sts. The bigger the loop on your hook, the looser your sl sts will be. You can also use a smaller hook to pull the back loop of the sl st up before working into it.
4. The last sl st of a row will be squished and hard to see, so don’t accidentally miss it.
Leave a long 20″ tail and ch 23.
Row 1 ( top to bottom): Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next ch, 1 sc in next 16 chs, 1 sl st in last 4 chs, turn.———22 sts
Row 2 (bottom to top): Ch 1, 1 sl st in BLO of the first sl st and next 3 sl sts, *(1 sc in next st, 1 tr in next st), repeat from * 6 more times, 1 sc in BLO of next 2 sts, 1 sl st in BLO of last 2 sts, turn.——-22 sts
Row 3 (top to bottom): Ch 1, 1 sl st in BLO of first sl st and next st, 1 sc in BLO of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 14 sts, 1 sc in BLO of last 4 sts, turn.——22 sts
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until your hat is 18-1/2 inches wide measured along the middle if you are making a woman’s size Small or Medium and 19-1/2 inches if you are making a woman’s size Large. You should end in a repeat of Row 2, the tr row. Fasten off leaving an 18″ tail for gathering the top of the hat.
Seaming the Side of the Hat
Fold the hat in half so that the textured row is now inside. Use the tail left at the beginning of the hat and a tapestry needle to whip stitch the side shut going under the free loops of the foundation chain and the front loop only of the last row. Reinforce the beginning and end of the seam with an extra st. Fasten off with a knot, but do not trim the remaining tail.
Gathering the Hat at The Top
Thread the tail left at the top through the tapestry needle, go in and out through every alternate st at the top of the crochet hat, pull, and cinch the hat shut. Make a couple of knots with the tail left from seaming the sides, make a few sts to close any gap at the top, knot again with the second tail, and securely weave in the remaining tail.
Finishing the Free Crochet Hat and Scarf Pattern
1. For the hat, weave in any remaining tails along the inside of the hat.
2. For the scarf, weave in any tail along the back side of the scarf where there is no texture.
